Positioning

Positioning determines which mental space you own among competitors and what you deliberately give up.

Positioning is the space you own in the customer's mind, and it is only won by giving something up. We start by deriving the competitive set from customer interviews rather than from the company's own category definition. The answer to “what else did you consider for this need?” is often unexpected: the competitor may not be another firm but the option of doing nothing, or the habit of solving it with internal resources.

The second step maps the trade-off axes of the category: speed or customisation, breadth or depth, low cost or low risk. We mark where competitors sit and test the empty spaces. Not every empty space is an opportunity; some are empty because customers do not care. So an axis of difference must meet three conditions together: the customer must care, you must be able to prove it, and competitors must not be able to copy it quickly.

The output is a positioning statement used as an internal reference, a proof set and a segment definition. That statement never goes on the website; its job is to be the fixed point against which every internal decision is measured.

Frequently asked questions

How long does positioning work take?
It depends on scope. For positioning, diagnosis of 1–3 weeks, main work of 4–10 weeks and rollout of 2–4 weeks are typical ranges. Organisation size, the number of people in the decision process and current data maturity set those ranges; exact timing is put in writing after the diagnosis session.
Can we buy positioning on its own?
Yes. During diagnosis we check together whether your problem really sits in positioning; often a combination of two services produces a better result, and we say so openly at the proposal stage.
How is positioning priced?
Scope-based. For positioning the deliverables, duration and the team involved are written item by item into the proposal, so no surprise line appears later. If budget is tight, the scope can be split into layers and continued once the first layer shows a result.
Can our own team run positioning delivery?
It can. On many projects we build the positioning decision and system layers while the in-house team continues day-to-day delivery. The guide, templates and training needed for handover are included.
