A digital twin for a production line layout decision
A digital twin and scenario comparison project running three line layout alternatives on the same model.
Case details
- Client: Production plant · automotive supplier
- Category: 3D and Digital Twin
- Teams involved: Digital and 3D, AI and Transformation
- Linked solution: Digital Twin and 3D Experience
Where did
we begin?
Three alternatives were under discussion for a new line layout and the decision was being made on estimates and experience. The cost of a wrong decision was high and stakeholders were imagining different things.
The decision set was defined first: which questions must the model answer? Scope was limited to those three questions, producing a decision-focused twin rather than a comprehensive plant twin.
What did we make?
A validated 3D model of the plant, a material-flow scenario engine and a comparison dashboard were produced. Three scenarios were run on the same model, comparing bottlenecks and operator movement.
What changed?
The decision meeting shifted from arguing about estimates to comparing scenarios; one alternative was eliminated in the model and the investment decision accelerated.
